All About Mi Notebook 14 Horizon

Xiaomi had set its foot into the Indian laptop outlet with its new Mi notebook series. It had introduced and released its two laptop models, Mi NoteBook 14 and Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition, adding to about a total of 5 variants. Let us check out each one for its features to figure out whether it’s promising or not.

Before proceeding to different models, one of the similarities between all models is that Xiaomi has preinstalled its two applications in its all variants. The first one is a Mi Blaze unlock the app by which the nearby Mi band 4 or Mi band 3 users can unlock the device in 1.2 seconds. The second application is Mi Smartshare, which helps transfer files such as videos, images, audios, etc. to other mobile devices or any NoteBook nearby.

All About Mi Notebook 14

The low-end Mi NoteBook 14 by Xiaomi comes with its three variants, i.e., you have an option to choose for three different versions of this same model.

This flagship device has a full metallic silver-colored body, making it sturdy even though it’s light in weight. An anodized sandblasted coating is making an outer layer that is giving a graceful and elegant look to the model. The thickness of the model is 17.9 nm.

The Notebook has been built with a full HD display with a 5.75nm thin bezel on its top and sides. Its 35.56 cm (14 inches) display is anti-glare; the display will not reflect when the tube lights are on or when using it in a bright room. The aspect ratio of the screen is 16:9, which gave around 86.5% screen to body ratio. You have the choice to choose between Intel UHD graphics or NVIDIA Ge Force MX250 graphics. The latter one is incredible for smoother gaming and better graphics. You can turn the device lid up easily by using one hand that much light it is. The thickness of the model is 17.9 nm.

Performance and Usability

The processor used in the device is the 10th generation Intel Core i5 10210U in all its variants with 1.6 GHz quad-core and boost clock up to 4.2 GHz at a time. This latest Comet lake processor will enhance multitasking to perform faster while you’re using different software’s.

As far as the battery life is concerned, the Xiaomi claims that the device can provide up to 10 hours of usage within a single charge and never run out when you need it the most. To add it, this estimation will also depend upon the frequency of usage. They also added that within half an hour, the battery would fill from 0% to 50%.

Larger cooling vents with a wider air intake area of 2530 mm2 helps to cool the machine at a faster rate. The fan runs very quietly that you can hardly hear its noise. The maximum sound of the fan is 35 Db that too, happens when the system is loaded to its maximum.

The wireless connectivity includes wireless LAN: dual-band 802.11 ac WiFi, Bluetooth V5.0. Two Type-A USB 3.1, one USB 2.0, one HDMI, one 3.5 mm audio jack and one DC jack interfaces are built in this model.

The model comes with two storage variants, one of 256 GB and 512 GB. Obviously, the second one would give a higher performance with minimal lag. The RAM is 8 GB DDR for smooth performance. Dedicated VRAM storage of 2GB has been included.

Scissor switch technology has been used in this, in which the keys require very little force to press, and they are quieter in action. The keyboard has a shorter travel key distance of 1.3 mm, which makes the typing – a pleasant task. Apart from this, it contains ABS coated keycaps, which are thinner and smoother.  The multi-touch trackpad disallows any casual palm touches if made. Moreover, they are smooth to glide your fingers over.

The device has stereo speakers with DTS Audio Processing. This will help you to fine-tune the desired sound that you want while watching movies or shows or while listening to music. But as per reviews, the sound is not that much loud what it had to be.

All About Mi Notebook 14 Horizon

The high-end Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon comes in two variants which are:

  1. Mi Notebook 14 Horizon with Core i5 processor.
  2. Mi Notebook 14 Horizon with Core i7 processor.

Look and Feel

The outer appearance is similar to the Mi Horizon 14 model. It has a metallic body of aluminum-magnesium alloy, the same anodized sandblasted coating, and silver body—slim to look, easy to carry, and sturdy design. The weight of the model is about 1.35 kg (lighter than Mi NoteBook 14).

Anti-glare Full HD, 14-inch display, will help to experience bright and high-quality screen watching. You can have up to 178 degrees wide viewing angle. Narrow 3 mm bezels play a prominent role in giving you a high viewing experience. With this, a 91% screen to body ratio has been achieved. The display lid is also not wobbly; it will remain in the position firmly. The screen has 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The NVIDIA Ge Force MX 350 graphics will help you enjoy casual games with faster and smooth performance. The display lid can be folded up to 140 degrees backward.

Performance and Usability

As stated earlier, you can choose between two processors in this model, either model with 10th generation Core i5 processor or with 10th generation Core i7 processor. The Core i7 processor will give you a 15% better performance than the previous generations. It will provide you a 300 MHz Intel turbo boost technology and up to 4.9 GHz clock speed.

65 W charger and 46Wh battery would give you a power backup of up to 10 hours. The power adapter is bigger when compared to other laptops; this may because it has to provide maximum charge within less time.

Interfaces included in the product are two Type-A USB 3.1, one USB 2.0, one HDMI, one Combo Audio Jack, and one charging point.

USB Type C port has been included in the Core i7 model, but unfortunately, you can’t do charging. It’s made only for data transfer.

You will hardly feel the device getting hotter since it is supported by a single wide fan to cool even after long usage.

2 GB GDDR5 (double data rate RAM) VRAM will give you 720p for gaming; it stores the graphics memory, thereby decreasing the load on GPU. By this additional VRAM storage, the smaller GPU present in this model can work well to provide optimum gaming performance.

Unlike Mi NoteBook 14, this model doesn’t offer options to choose between storage. You’ll get 512 GB NVMe SSD storage in the two variants of this model. RAM has been the same in both, i.e., 8 GB clocked at 2666 MHz for fast performance. Storage of 512 GB NVMe SSD will give you 5 times faster speed in case of file transfer, game loads, and much better swift features as compared to SATA SSD used in the 512 GB variant of the Mi Notebook 14.

The keyboard is similar to Mi Notebook 14 models. It has scissor-switch technology with a 1.3 mm travel distance—a dust protection layer to help you lessen the efforts for cleaning. ABS coated keys, and the multi-touch trackpad doesn’t have any separate buttons. They are built with palm rejection technology.

Like Mi notebook 14 models, the sound system is packed with stereo speakers and DTS audio for ear pleasant and clear audio. DTS sound processing application is also available to fine-tune the sounds.

What Are The Pros?

  • Latest generation high-performance processor.
  • NVIDIA Ge Force MX 350 graphics.
  • Palm rejection technology in a multi-touch trackpad.
  • Five times faster 512 GB NVMe SSD.

  • Full HD Anti-glare, matte finish screen.

What Are The Cons?

  • You can’t upgrade or expand the RAM storage.
  • You’ll only get a webcam only in a separate bundle, not embedded in the device.
  • SD card slots are absent.

  • Weight: 1.35 kg
  • Display size: 14 inch
  • Processor: 10th generation Intel Core i5/ 10th generation Intel Core i7.
  • Graphics: NVIDIA Ge Force MX 350.
  • Storage: 8GB RAM, 512 GB NVMe SSD.

Xiaomi has been successful in introducing premium features in low priced smartphones. Compared to this fact, they had been a bit aggressive in deciding the cost of these laptops launched in India. However, the latest generation processors, graphics, battery life, etc., would stand out promising to nullify it.

Besides, the Xiaomi had not included a built-in webcam in any of its models. So, they had to give out a separate unit, which is good, but you always require to put in up on the screen before usage, increasing your efforts. Since it’s the time where everything is getting through webinars and video meetings, this would be a lag feature for this laptop.

The Horizon model is thin and slim, highly beneficial when it comes to travel. The most positive about the model is that it had tried to incorporate most of the wanting features that a medium user will require. The latest Core i7 processor is actually a great highlighting feature of this model, where other laptops are still lagging in case of using the latest processor. However, the device is also not suitable for high users; for example,

you can’t experience high gaming performance or high video editing in this model. These are recommended for medium usage and normal productivity tasks such as using a spreadsheet, watching movies, average gaming, etc.
